Well! This is the first tutorial!
As the first one, we'll talk about the Blender's interface, so the people out there who is not used to Blender can understand it (at least basically).
So let's go for it! ;) You can see the video in HD on Vimeo, so you will appreciate better the buttons and all that stuff.
In this tutorial you'll learn:
- Navigating in the 3d view.
- Types of panels.
- Interface layouts.
- Adapting interface to your needs.
- Customizing Blender 2.5 (Shortcuts, colors...)
Level of complexity: Beginner
And here is one thing I forgot about the interface: Presing Ctrl while dragging on the panel corners will swap the selected panel and the one where you release the left click ;)
On the next tutorial we'll take a look at how to create and modify objects!
Take care!

Thank you very much for this web. It's difficult to start learning Blender in the new version because there are not good tutorials using the new interface. This web match with what I need perfectly.
Adding to bookmarks now.
Saludos desde Canarias. :).
I'm glad you like it, SNCH ;)
Gracias!
your tutorial is saving my life dude ;)
Thanks guys! ;)
This tutorial was extremely informative. Thank you
Thanks Vipin ;) Good luck with Blender :D
thanks for the great tutorial!
great quality and easy to understand. :)
THERE IS NO MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTON!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, RebelMoogle!
Annonymous, if you don't have a mmb, you can try the emulate mmb button on the user preferences... at least on windows, I don't know how it works on other platforms ;)
Is the "middle mouse button" supposed to be the scroll wheel? If not, than you're crazy.
I posted the "There is no middle mouse button" comment. How do you get to this "emulate mmb button"? I am using Windows.
Normally, the scroll wheel can also be clicked and that's the middle mouse button... if you're using a very old mouse... probably not :S
You can emulate it from the User Preferences/Input, and activate the Emulate 3 buttons mouse option. With this option you can emulate the mmb with alt+left click (Only works with right click selection mode).
What if I using it on Mac?
I have no middle mouse button!
Well... you said you use windows, but in case you use mac, please refer to this link:
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro/Non-standard_equipment
Good luck! ;)
Sorry... im not the same guy. haha
and thanx for the link
Ow! Sorry! I'm pretty tired and somewhat I thout that anonymous was some kind of alias xDD
;) Hope the link helped!
Seriously...awesome tutorial, thank you very much!!! It's perfect for newbies :D
Excellent tutorial. Very useful for newbies like me
Thank you!! Glad you learnt something from it :)
This is an old video could you please release one for the blender 2.6 series thankyou
very good indeed
Thank you. Great tutorial!
Thank you all!, and sorry... but blender is on 2.5 yet, maybe some buttons or menus have changed, but nothing that really needs to remake the entire tutorial :)
Great video, but the music is too loud and distracting!
Great! Very useful and understandable. thank you!
wow i just learned how to do this and its really helpful thank you :)
Hi thanks for the nice tuto, where can I download this video?
Hi & thanks! But videos are not downloadable directly... :(
Thanks for the tutorial, its brilliant, except I have blender 2.7, and I can not find how to open the properties tab/window thingy, its not with the rest. Does anyone know where the properties thing is on 2.7?
Well... Sorry, but the last official version is 2.55 (You can check it at blender.org, the official's blender website).
Where did you downloaded it?
I just downloaded blender. It says it is version 2.49 for a Mac (Power PC). I am not see an interface even close to what is shown in this tutorial. I can not find the tool panel at all. Any ideas? Thank you. Holly
nice tutorial
Holly, this video appears to be using the 2.5x Beta. You can get the latest beta version here: http://www.blender.org/download/get-254-beta/
Thanks for the info, Anonymous :) I've been out theese days... Alternatively, you can check the "How to get a recent blender build" tutorial, that way you will always have the latests versions of the software ;)
eeeuhm.... right, this seems hard.
anyway, is this working well with unity 3d?
since i am not a very experienced game-maker i would like simple things.
i just want to know if this is'nt going to take 4 hours of decomprimising and loads of codes to put my creation in unity.
Well... I'm sorry, I've never used unity, but for what I know so far... blender is pretty compatible with Unity :)
And yeah... it's hard... any 3d thing is hard :)
the tutorial is good but the music is very distracting :(
I'm Sorry :S On the latest tutorial I already notticed that and I've quit that bg music ;)
Thank you, thank you for your time and making this understandable!
I'm sorry, but what's the crosshair in the middle of the plane for? I always accidentally clicked and moved it, and I'm afraid I'm going to mess up with things.
Don't worry PinkSamantha, it is just for moving the plane on that axis, but well... you can just go ahead to the next tutorial about creating and moving objects to see what it does ;)
great tutorial, A++. im glad they replaced the old 2.4x interface tutorial with the new 2.5x interface.thanks again.
Very nice tutorial. Seriously blew me away with this.
Oliver,
Thanks for this tutorial, I have learned very much as newbey in such short time, wooo... many thanks, I hardly can wait for the next tutorial because I have so much to learn.
many greez
John Peters
Thank you very much it is a great tutorial.
I am just starting to learn 3d .
Please keep the good work . I appreciate your great gift of teaching to all.
Thanks and thanks again

Is it possible to download this video?
Thanks a lot! Even your voice is relaxing and nice to follow the tutorial.
As I'm new to blender I'd not like to use beta versions so I find sad that your video is with 2.5 interface because there are a lot of things I don't understand.
Thanks ;) Is possible to download it from Vimeo :)
And well, it's done with 2.5 even it's beta, because it's the future! And it will be stable soon, so if you want to learn Blender... my advice is that you learn with the beta version... or just wait till it becames stable, because if you start now with 2.49, in a few months you'll need to "relearn" everything again, cause old and new version are quite different :)
Take care!
THANKS i really needed this i may be a kid but i learned really fast and animation is fun to me
and im not new to blender but to 2.5 it confused me so thanks again man or sir idk
I liked the music personally lol. Can you tell me who it was? :)
Its not loading?
Thanks for the tutorial.
Can't wait until I try out all that stuff :)
Greetings from Belgium.
Thank you very much for sharing this ;) I like how you comunicate with people, nice job RESPECT!!
Hahah, the music... was me with a music program I like a lot xD (Fruity loops).
Thank you all for your kind comments! ;)
Nice Jobs , Thank very much
Question:
I use a tablet for all of my mouse function (my touchpad broke on my laptop,) and I'm not sure what would qualify as a middle mouse button, and there's nothing I can find help-wise with my tablet support... Would you know anything to help me?
Hi, Cy Den:
I use a tablet a lot, but with blender, just some times, for sculpting and that kind of things. I don't know how is your pen... but normally, it should have buttons, and you should be able to configure their behavior.
I use a wacom, and the pen has two lateral buttons, wich I use as right click, and middle click.
Hope it helps! ;)
Oh, thank you so much! :D It really helped, it makes life a lot easier!
(Yay for wacom users!)
Oliver, thank you for all your effort in creating these tutorials. You have done a professional job. Keep up the good work!
I have one question. Sometimes when I use my middle mouse button drag to rotate my view, the rotation center is not in the center of the view. Why? And how does it change? And how can I place it where I want it?
Thanks.
Awesome, thank you so much for doing this. Coming from 3DS Max and Maya, Blender seemed foreign to me, and this was sooooo helpful. I'm onto the next tut.
Thank you all for your efforts :D
About the point of view center: I usually use an opcion wich is Rotate around Selection (In the User Preferences Panel / Interface). It makes my life a lot easier, because that way, the view always rotates taking my selection as the center :)
Hope it helps! ;)
Dzieki! Bardzo przydatny tutorial.
Thank you. Great tutorial!
Thanks for the tutorial but as someone mentioned it doesn't look the same on the Mac. You know any video that shows the interface for Mac?
Sorry, Emil... but I don't know any tutorial about this on mac, and I don't have a mac neither know how Blender looks on it. But... as far as I know, it should look almost the same! Is possible that you have downloaded 2.49 instead of 2.5?
@Oliver Ah, that was it. I have now looked up some tutorials for ver. 2.49 that looks like mine interface. Thanks!
Glad it helped, Emil ;) Good luck with Blender!
Thanks a good tutorial.
Oliver, dude, your tutorial is awesome! I just started as a student in 3D Animation last year and the school I was in has us using MAYA 09 and Blender 2.55 is wayyyy better I feel way more comfortable using the interfaces and enjoy your tutorial on the basic interface and you for some reason made the basics way easier to grasp. I do not know why schools dont use this software its free and easy to use, it would save schools so much money, lol. So Thank you Thank you for these tutorials. I will be checking the rest of them out later on, but YOUR THE MAN!! lol take care bro and keep em coming
-peace
Thank you very much, Tom. Your words are very encouraging for me :)
HOpe you learn a lot!! And about the schools... I think it's because for now, in the industry, they use commercial software, so they want to teach something that you can use on the industry. The good news is that from this new version, Blender will be more used by small and medium companies :D (And hopefully big ones!)
See you and good luck with blender!
Very Helpful. How many difficulties can I expect to experience using the beta version as opposed to the soon to be finished one?
THANKS. Great tutorial with helpful hints. :)
Having never used any 3d modeling software but always been interested in it I have come across this software, so far still interested. now off to find out how to create something... hopefully
New Years Resolution: Learn to use Blender. This tutorial has helped a lot. However on the camera view the render doesn't do it, I got it by pressing Ctrl + Alt + Num Pad 0
Thank you all!!
About using this beta version, I find the benefits better that the possible bugs and all that, but well, that's your decision ;)
Good luck using blender!
And well... Ctrl + Alt + Num Pad 0 is the shortcut for making the selected camera the active one :)
Happy New Year!
Love your accent, really easy to understand and process. Can't wait to start using!
Good tutorial. Again, music distracting. Keep up the tutorials!
Happy newyear everyone!
Little off topic but when i open blender i don't have the 'add button' button in the left shelf. Is there anything you can tell me, because i watched an other tutorial on this site and there you start to make a button 'set origin'
Very good tutorial btw!
Thanks guys :)
About the add button... well, it should be there, and if it's not... it's probably a bug, so sorry, I cannot help with that :S
Anyway, maybe you can solve it by downloading a recent blender build from graphicall.org ;)
Good luck!
Very helpful tutorials!
Well done!!!
Hi.
I am that new to blender and/or 3d anything or everything that after watching the first video tutorial I still don't know nothing about blender. So, I really need your help before I keep trying and watch it again if you can tell me if I can use blender on my project of building my own guitar. You know, I need to be very precise with all the dimensions and to have a plan drawn before actually cutting the pieces of wood and deciding where are gonna be the frets and in which precise part should I attach the neck and fingerboard to the guitar body, etc.
Also, which other tutorials are gonna be helpful to me in my project.
Thanks.
Hi.
Jack again. I have not downloaded blender, yet. Is it gonna work on my macbook OS X with safari?
Thanks.
I am a bit confused. At the start when you were going through the views or something, you were talking about the mode GraphEditor and others, which the Blender I downloaded does not have. Help please? Otherwise great tutorial!
@Aris: Thanks so much ;)
@Jack: As far as I know, it should work on your OSX computer ;) And well... you can use blender for that purpose. Anyway, I think that probably another more technical software like AutoCad could be easier to make what you need, but of course you can do it on blender.
BUT, on blender or on autocad, or on whatever, what you're trying to make will need a lot of advanced skills with any of the softwares... so take it easy, with time and patience ;)
Good luck!
About tutorials that can help you with that stuff... sorry but I don't know any tutorial about precise and technical modelling atm :(
@Anonymous: You don't have GraphEditor? hmmm I don't know... please download a recent build from graphicall.org to see if it's a bug, or just an old revision of blender (or maybe the old version 2.49, in wich the GraphEditor was called Curve Editor, or something like that)
Opening Blender (2.49b) for the first time, my screen looks a LOT DIFFERENT than what this video shows. Because of this, the video isn't much help so far, as it is supposed to tell us everything we need to know about the ui. Unfortunately it assumes my screen already has panels/windows open that I have NO IDEA how to open!
Well, if you look at the title of this video, it's called blender 2.5 basic interface, so if you want to learn 2.49b... please, refer to a tutorial about it.
If you want to learn about 2.5, wich is the version I use on this tutorial, you can download it from graphicall.org our the last beta version at the blender official web, blender.org.
God luck!
So i want to emulate the middle mouse button but where is user preferences??????
Ctrl+Alt+U or File/User preferences
if you are in 2.49 you need to slide down the upper main menu and you'll see them ;)
Great Tutorial but I need to figure out how to remove a frame. In your tutorial you say to click the bottom left corner and drag to the direction of the frame you want to overlap. When I do this it just splits the frame the same as if I clicked in top right.
lol, nevermind. I figured it out.
hahah, no problem, I was just going to answer ;)
It's just matter of clicking and dragging to the adjacent panel, not into the same one :D
Glad you figured it out!
a very nice tutorial, I learned a whole bunch, thanks
next time can you state which version you're using? I'm new to this kind of stuff.
whooops... hahaha...that was stupid of me...haha oops
It is very difficult to learn with the music playing. It is a distraction, not a help.
Sorry for that. Some people have already commented it, so in the newest tutorials there isn't background music ;)
my blender doesn't look like the one in the video. my one looks much "simpler". and some options are missing. like the properties-panel.
in the infopanel os written:
www.blender.org 249.2
o.k. wrong version. so why is on
http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/
the latest version not the latest version?
:) That is because the latest version is 2.5, but it's a beta, yet in development. So 2.49 is the latest "stable" release ;) When 2.5 is finnished and completely (almost) stable, it will replace 2.49 ;)
Thanks for this Tut..I model in Max and Maya...and now in Blender thanks to you :)
i am the one that said i couldnt find properties:
i downloaded the wrong one i got the right one now...
No subtitles? I'm deaf :(
I'm working on getting subtitles for all the tutorials, but please, understand that it's a lot of work, so it will take me some time ;)
i love you.. thanks for your tutorial may God bless you :D
Honestly, the best site for learning Blender! Honestly! Thanks from Murcia, Spain. Really useful "tuts".
Hey! I'm in Valencia right now! :D Muchas gracias por tu comentario ;)
could not watch the video..
Hey,I can't find properties on the window type
Thanks to U! From South America!(Chile) very very useful!
Thank you so very much, as a 3dsmax artist who has been wanting to learn Blender, this is great.
Thank you guys! Glad you like it! :D
Had a problem with my interface (compared it to yours - mine was fairly different) awhile ago but figured out that you were using 2.5x while I had the stable 4.9 version. I went ahead and uninstalled the 4.9 and got the 2.56a-beta.
Otherwise, the tutorial is very Nice, well done. I like the bg music as well. :)
YES! finally able to get the number keys to do the view, verah usefull.
Nice job :-)
Where's the tutorial?
That video is shit.
Dear Blender-
not everybody has a home isp, or even wants one. Blender manual is online only, so for people like me, Blender doesn't have a manual.
Blender with no manual makes root canal surgery seem like fun.
hi blender- the tutorial is good, but i suggest u make it available for download for those of us that don't have 24/7 internet access
Doh! I followed your lead, and clicked the "Save as default" and Blender opens with several windows and dialogs open. Now, I want to go back to the original defaults. You left that part out!
Good stuff here, very useful. Thanks for putting it together.
Hi, TVM for putting these great tuts together, there is one more thing that's still confusing me. (well lots really!! but lets go one at a time)
There is a setting "Pivot Center for rotation/scaling" just to the left of "Transform Orientation Settings", In these and many other tutorials I have looked at for 2.5+ this setting is always set to "Bounding Box Center" whereas the 2.56a beta version I am using defaults this setting to "Median Point".
Should us beginners change this to "Bounding Box" or not, also what is the difference with these settings?
Thanks in advance
Just use the "load factory settings" option in the file menu, just below user prefs and save user prefs. That should put it all back to the original settings, as if fresh out of the virtual box.
Thanks for responding the "load factory settings" thing :) if you want to keep the factory settings, remember to save User preferences with Ctrl+U after loading them ;)
About the pivot questions... you can go to the create and transform objects tutorial, there I explain that things ;)
Hey Oliver thanks for responding to my question about the pivot settings, will have another look at at create and transform objects, must have missed that bit. Man there is so much to take on board! But each of your tuts make things clearer. You have the patience of a saint. We beginners really appreciate what you are doing for us. :0]
Thanks a lot for your kind words ;) I like you learned something from this :)
Thanks for this, it saved my sanity! I was looking everywhere and found nothing as simple in explaining the interface as you did right here. Thanks for posting it!
Thank you for taking your time to make this great tutorial.
Really great for a beginner like me.
This tutorial makes me nuts. At some point around 2:00 he says "pressing this", while his cursor pointer is flying all over the screen. I have no idea what he pressed.
And what the hell is a "heather" in relation to a panel? Any clue?
He spends huge amounts of time telling you what you might learn, rather than just teaching you.
Holy fuck stop making that sound with your mouth, you sound like a kid with a down syndrome.
Did you even watch this video? Didn't you notice how annoying and stupid you sound?
I had to stop the video after 3 minutes and find a decent tut on youtube.
Hi there, Roger!
Sorry if I didn't explain the things how you would like me to do :S
At 2:00, while I say "pressing this", I'm pointing at the button on the left bottom corner of the 3dView, and while I talk I come back to it and press it... so... I think it was pretty clear.
About the "heather", I mean header, wich is the menu on the bottom/top in each panel, sorry for my pronunciation :(
Anyway, thank you very much por taking your time posting your comment, you could just go ahead and forget about it. I appreciate it ;) Crits make us better! :D
Good luck!
Thank you so much, I have spent hours trying to get a good tutorial.
I am very grateful!
You are the hero to all noobs!
lol thanks for the vid
Blender is powerful and free.
Unfortunately, its GUI is awkward and not user friendly at all. That's what makes this video so popular and useful. Many developers say "don't use it if you don't like it", like they tell customers "it's as designed, so live with it". That's a poor argument...
Bless u for all of your tutorials. They are a really useful tool when it comes to learning about such a complex program. I've just finished watching your first tutorial. Lets see how i can deal with the next ones.
Thanks my friend, that was very useful, keep up the good work!!!
Thank you very much. I used to know the old interface very well, but this tutorial helped me a lot to get going with the new version.
Thank to your explanations, bleder goes so easy and undertandable, gracias enserio, saludos de Tampico, México.
when I try to activate the Emulate 3 buttons mouse option, nothing happens. With right mouse button I click "Emulate 3 buttons mouse" and it says: select deselect hide and unhide, I try to press all these but nothing happens. I have windows 7.
Hmmm I suppose you need to click it with your left mouse button, not the right button ;)
Thanks for this! I've been trying and trying to get the energy and focus to learn some animation- thanks for making it easier! Keep up the good work!
Oliver can You help me? I'm max user also, and im using middle button for pan view, not rotate. In blender 2.49 i can easily change it, but i cant find the option in 2.5
Hm, i've got it by myself xD, just go to the "user preferences->input->3D View->3D View(global) and everywhere i found move view - changet to middle mouse, and everywhere i found rotate view - changed to shift + middle mouse.
Hi Rafal! Glad you found the solution! :)
Thanks alot...j
I wonder if I'm the only one who has the problem that his GUI is NOT the same as the GUI in all the tutorials here (I have the latest Version of Blender)... :/
Those tuts lose their sence when you can't follow the instructions because things simply look different, are somewhere else or don't exist at all.
Maybe someone could tell me how to get this theme or whatever it is?
Btw. I don't mind your accent :) dunno why those idiots have a problem with it oO for me everything is understandable and clear ;)
Ah... never mind!
Should have read further :D
Hahah no problem ;) Thanks for your comments :) In fact, it's the last version of blender, but as it's beta yet, the last official release is the version 2.49, not 2.5 :D
In a few days, 2.57 will be the official release! Stay tuned ;)
Hi Oliver,
I think your website is a GREAT Contribution to the Blender Community. Now for the constructive criticism: The video quality on "Blender 2.5 Interface" is absolutely fantastic BUT 2 things could improve it;
[BTW- I am a school teacher so this is about instructional design...]
1 - at almost 33 minutes it is a LONG video packed FULL of new info. It could be broken up
into 3 or even 11 short videos. Most students
(even grown up ones...) will nod off after
10 minutes)
2- er... that "music" soundtrack is a bit loud
and tends to hypnotise one off to sleep after
a while...
The main thing when designing Instructional sequences is to remember the KIS/S principle;
Keep It Short/Simple!
It is like how you eat an Elephant...
one mouthful at a time!
Thanks for reading this and
Keep up the good work mate!
;-)
Cheers,
Sam
Thanks a lot for that very valuable advices about teaching :) In my newest tutorial I have applied some of that principles, I divide themes into several parts, and I also deactivated the music while speaking... but even that way I end up with quite long tutorials... :S
In the future ones, I'll try to make useful and quick tutorials, so anyone gets bored watching them ;)
Thanks again, Sam!!
ponganlo en espanjol please
Just want to add my thanks! Great work.
MIDDLE MOUSE BUTTON TRICK!!
(without emulating, click left and right together)
I don't know if you already noticed but middle button doesn't really exist on it's own. I know some mouses have it physically built in, but it doesn't send any "special information" to the computer it just says to the PC "right and left together" so...
If you have a two button mouse and are skilful enough just click both left and right buttons together, and it will act as a middle button click.
Good luck, and hope somebody finds this useful.
Wow!! I didn't know that! I supose it only happens with mouse that only has two buttons :)
Great tip anyway!! Thanks!
