Hi! The last week, blendtuts.com has registered a very high number of visits :) and I wanted to "celebrate" it by making a video with an idea that was in my head since a few months ago.

I love to see timelapses, but in 3d... I thought that recording a timelapse with smooth and "normal" camera movements should be possible, instead of seeing that lightspeed orbiting and panning around camera, that sometimes can result "a bit" crazy!

So from time to time I tried out things, and I was thinking about how to achieve that result, and a couple of weeks ago, I saw the light and discovered a way of doing it! :) I like to call this "Cinematic Timelapse", because you can "film" the process with the desired camera movements.

I know that I wont use this method on all my timelapses, because it's pretty time consuming... but I wanted at least to try it out with a simple project!

The project, the model and all that stuff weren't very important for me, only the "timelapsing" method was... even the "textures" are not textures at all! xD It's just a very quick overpaint of a basic lighting render.

Hope you like it! And thanks to all of you for supporting blendtuts.com! Overall for that people who have take the time to write very inspirational and motivational emails to me ;) They are very apreciated!

Wow...
Respect!!
I would like to see the first bit ( building the head ) in slow motion as it was almost a tutorial in itself.
Thanks for inspiring me to get off my ass and get down to some serious Blending.

This is great Oliver. It's original. Congrats.

I think you must share your cinematic timelapse in http://www.blendernation.com/submit-news/ section so that every blender user can see it.

Thanks a lot, Demohero :) I've already submited it to blendernation... but I don't know exactly how it works. If tonight it isn't published... I'll contact with them ;)

Now. Explain how you did it. This site isn't called BlendTuts for nothing.

Oliver Villar said...

I'll make a tutorial for sure, AniCator, but I'm pretty busy this days, so it'll need to wait ;)

What was the music track?

Brilliant work!

You can see the title at the end of the video:

Citadel - Celestial Aeon Project

It's Creative Commons, and you can download it at www.jamendo.com ;)

The modeling is great but I'm much more interested in how you achieved the cinematic effect. I could really use this effect and a tutorial on the subject would be invaluable.

Oliver Villar said...

Thanks Wayne ;)

I'll make that tutorial as soon as possible :)

Thanks for the music URL. I look forward to seeing what you do next.

This is really impressive.

I really can't begine to imagine how you achieved this effect.

Maybe I can imagine a way, but the way I have in my head seems rather frustrating and time consuming XD

I think every 10 seconds you moved the camera and take a snapshot. Or perhaps you have a script that does it. Then some postprocessing to glow things. But I don't understand why some faces go lighted and keep glowing sometime when you are working on other parts.

Oliver Villar said...

Thanks everyone ;)

It's pretty simple, just some work is needed for setting up everything :)

That glowing parts, Bao2, are because the filter takes them as very bright, so it highlights them ;)

I cant't find that nifty paypal donate button on your blog. Are you going to fix it?

Oliver Villar said...

Thanks a lot, perpleks, but for now, blendtuts is all free :) I haven't donate buttons on the web, but in a few months I'll make some cool (I try hehe) commercial tutorials to raise some money so I can invest more time on blendtuts.

But don't worry, I'll be doing free tutorials even I make some of them commercial :)

Thanks!
